Howell votes for rail

06.22.07 | technician | In ann arbor, transit, livingston county

Howell, a place that doesn’t necessarily bring to mind progressive thinking on public transit, has voted to support regional rail that would connect the city to Ann Arbor in the midst of construction along US-23:

The Washtenaw and Livingston Line train, nicknamed WALLY by members of the US-23 Coalition that secured funds for the feasibility study, is expected to run an express and five-stop service, along 28 miles of track belonging to Great Lakes Central Railroad.

Early hopes of having the commuter rail line in place by summer during construction or obviously optimistic but this is another step forward and with luck something will be in place next year.

Meanwhile, at least two Ann Arbor-based employers have promised to cover a portion of the rider costs for their Livingston County employees.

There’s talk in Brighton of having the rail line go through downtown Brighton. Could this spawn transit oriented development in Livingston County?
