Detroit Blog coverage of Detroit businesses

09.11.07 | technician | In restaurant, bakery, museum, african-american, 7 mile, gratiot

Detroitblog has been running a special summer series dedicated to stores and businesses in the city of Detroit that you most likely did not know existed. It’s a big city covering a large area and a lot of neighborhoods seem like there would be nothing that interesting in them but that’s only if you’re clueless like me. But this Detroit blogger has uncovered some real gems. Like the Nortown Bakery on 7 Mile Rd west of Van Dyke, a Romanian bakery in what used to be a Polish bakery and general store. Or Dyer’s, a fairly simple bar in a fairly simple yet irreplaceable two-story building on Gratiot near Outer Drive on the far east side. Or Gardella Furniture, also on Gratiot but just outside of downtown, which carries furniture from the low-end to the high or “Chevy- to Bentley-level” as Mr. Gardella puts it. They’re able to sell at a discount the best furniture you might find in the suburbs due to lower operating costs. And then there’s Mama’s Place which is introduced thusly: “In a city packed with Soul Food shacks, Mama’s Place on Seven Mile stands out by offering both down-home, southern-style food and a clean place to eat it.” Recently they’ve covered Nature’s Products, a medicinal herb store on Conant between Hazel Park and Hamtramck that’s been healing those who can’t afford a traditional doctor for 29 years and that crazy place full of shards of mirrors on Grand River where it meets Grand Boulevard which is actually the Dabls African Bead Gallery

I don’t know who he is but I just want to say thank you to the author of Detroitblog for this coverage and the photos of the buildings so you can recognize them and of the people inside them.
