So the White Stripes’s new album Icky Thump was played on the air in its entirety well before its release date by Chicago DJ Electra on Q101, which made Jack quite upset. Lots of folks are backlashing against Jack for being so upset, seeing it as the reaction based on greed. Thus the station is getting what they want, buzz and promotion for themselves by essentially “pirating” the music.
Here’s another take on it:
How could anyone stand behind this DJ? She leaked pre-release NON-PROMO material on to the radio. Does her station have advertising on it? Are they making money by airing a stolen, leaked copy of a future release? Just because a friend gives you something doesn’t make it legal for you to do what you want with it. Receiving stolen property is still a crime as far as I can tell.
And no we don’t have a copy of the poorly recorded leak.
