Waterfront Living: Gideon and Jaime Pfeffer

While many of their college friends headed for New York, Chicago, San Francisco or Washington after graduation, Gideon and Jaime Pfeffer are glad they chose Detroit. The lifestyle they enjoy at Harbortown, a resort-type community just east of downtown, and the business interests and activities they’ve found here, are more rewarding, they believe.

Jaime recently left the financial services field to devote herself to writing, mostly about Detroit. Looking out her window at the lawn leading to the shoreline and new public RiverWalk, she says she finds inspiration for writing.

Gideon always is on the lookout for opportunities to invest in Detroit, whether it’s becoming a shareholder in The Pit Stop, a new downtown bar; renovating blighted homes or buying into a landmark development.

Nice feel-good story about fellow blogger Girl in the D and her husband to move from New York to Detroit to start a business in the suburbs and then in the city proper. Now there’s a couple I really admire.

Silicon Valley firm picks Ann Arbor for office

Barracuda Networks Inc., a fast-growing Silicon Valley company that provides anti-spam and anti-virus software for businesses, has opened an engineering and software- development office in downtown Ann Arbor and hopes to employ up to 60 engineers and developers there within two years.

Barracuda was founded in 2003 by president and CEO Dean Drako, a 1987 electrical engineering graduate of the University of Michigan. It now employs about 300 and claims to have more than 40,000 customers in more than 80 countries.

Drako said he opened the Ann Arbor office, at 912 S. Main St., on June 20 to ease recruiting by being close to a large pool of talent, many of whom might prefer to stay in Michigan if they could find a good job.

With Google on the scene I think it has become much easier to recruit new hires for software companies in Ann Arbor because they can feel more confident that if they lose their job there’s always someone like Google who will hire them.

There’s more to CityFest than eating and listening to good music. There’s the marketplace and the local businesses that are there year-round.
