Hamtramck Update

07.09.07 | technician | In hamtramck, mexicantown

Hamtramck Star, our favorite Hamtramck blog, recounts a bicycle trip from Hamtramck to Mexicantown, taking Oakland south to Euclid and taking that to 14th which goes through a lot of interesting neighborhoods (something Detroit has seemingly an endless supply of for some definition of interesting) and then turning at the Michigan Central Station to go through Mexicantown. They took many colorful photos on theway and post them on their blog.

We didn’t know what to expect from the one-way 14th but as we turned South on 14th from Euclid we discovered a bicyclist’s dream. No less than three lanes going south with a very wide, totally empty, parking lane. Who needs bike lanes with streets like this? There was ample room for bicycles and few lights, so we made good time.

But back in Hamtramck, the Freep discovers once again that Hamtramck is a happening place, at least for a certain segment of the population, i.e. cool people.

One of the best things about Detroit’s nightlife scene is that it’s filled with all sorts of little gems.

I love hanging out at the obvious big-name places — wine bars rank among my favorites — but it’s those unassuming spots, sometimes in neighborhoods that I would otherwise never even think of heading to, that end up being the best after-work or weekend hangouts.

A great example is Hamtramck, which is littered with scrappy music clubs and neighborhood bars that cater to arty types, working-class residents and garage rockers. Its nightlife scene is almost as diverse as its multiethnic makeup, offering night crawlers a chance to head to dance clubs, blues bars, watering holes and live rock venues.
