The Great Lakes Shall Rise Again

07.11.07 | technician | In transit, great lakes, fossil fuels, water, density

While some of us, although not near the enough of us, are occupied with the thought of future scarcity of fossil fuels there is another natural resource that is destined to become in high demand despite decreasing supply.  That is water.  Already much of this planet’s population lacks access to potable water, water without arsenic or other deadly chemicals and water that’s not swarming with bacteria.  But in the United States where we will have access to technology to turn any water source into drinking water many of us will simply not have access to any water at all, filtered or not.

The “belt” paradigm will seem outdated, Rust Belt versus Sun Belt.  It will be rather Great Lakes, with its short distances between major metropolitan areas, established rail networks, cooler weather, and most importantly, access to freshwater, versus Desertland, a hot dry region dependant on increasingly expensive electricity to keep themselves cool, constant battles over limited supplies of water sources, and the high cost of moving goods to, from, and among the region where cities are located far apart from each other and with little density inside them.
