Sangria in Royal Oak

07.27.07 | technician | In royal oak, restaurant review, tapas

The nightlife in Royal Oak makes it one of the most happening places in the Midwest, rivaling any big city neighborhood despite being a suburb.  But if you’re used to the finding a bar or restaurant to hang out at just by walking around downtown you may have missed Sangria, which is located on the west edge of downtown Royal Oak.  Sangria is among other things a tapas restaurant which are by default on the pricey and upscale side.  The tapas, small Spanish side dishes, are presented on to menus, those served hot and those served cold.  One dish be ordered in particular was memorable.  It was a fried squid dish of some sort which I expected to be like calamari, kind of tough and chewy, but ended up being much more soft, almost like eating fat udon noodles.  Very tasty too.  Also memorable about this restaurant: almost every table was all girls, a few big parties, and they were all dressed to impress, much like many of the twentysomething’s strolling about Royal Oak at night.  Perhaps they were interested in the company of guys but it’s still a place to consider if you’re a group of guys looking for someplace with very little competition.

Sangria 401 S. Lafayette St., Royal Oak, MI 48067. 248-543-1964
