ANN ARBOR’S LINUX BOX CORPORATION WINS CONTRACT WITH U OF M SCHOOL …
The Linux Box Corporation, an Ann Arbor-based designer and developer of customized Linux-based open source software and related services, announced it has implemented a Content Management System (CMS) for the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE). The CMS is currently in beta testing phase of implementation.
The new CMS will use Drupal, a free, open source content management software system that best fits the school’s requirements. Linux Box has successfully deployed Drupal for several customers, including Royal Oak Schools, MQCCC and the Fisher’s Net.

Madison Heights business takes zip sauce national
Detroit and its suburbs have some particularly unique cuisine that can’t be found even a few hundred miles outside the area.
Here, restaurant-goers enjoy their Coney Island hot dogs, almond boneless chicken, Arabic and Polish specialties, and steaks covered in the Detroit original zip sauce.
Zip sauce, a mixture of a kind of trumped-up beef au jus and butter, has been spread on steaks here for at least the last 65 years. Many restaurants claim the sauce as their own, but only one man owns the name.
Famous Detroit steak houses such as Larco’s Italian Chophouse and Grill, Andiamo and Carl’s Chop House all serve steaks with their own variation of the zip sauce on top.
The majority of the stores that currently carry Esshaki’s Zip Sauce are located in Michigan, although he said he has big plans to take the brand national. Esshaki is partnering with a national distributor to get his bottles into more stores throughout the country.
Twenty stores in California, where the sauce is mixed and bottled, also carry the sauce, Esshaki said. A handful of stores sell the Zip Sauce in Chicago and New York.

MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee put on an electronic DJ performance Saturday (August 11) in Windsor, Canada at the Boom Boom Room. Lee and DJ Aero are touring North America on their 2007 Electro Mayham tour.
“Real DJs create music when they perform, not just spin records. Tommy, call up Richie Hawtin for some lessons if you really want to do this DJ thing.”
Apparently, he was worried about getting beat up again if he were to perform in Detroit.

Dream Cruise Revs Up You Tube
But as a mark of how big YouTube video is used by corporate America as a way to extend their branding, General Motors has posted a Dream Cruise segment on Berkley’s historic Vinsetta Garage, which is located on Woodward and has helped restore many a vintage car.
All of the YouTube videos celebrate an event which around the world is becoming as synonymous with Detroit as the Mardi Gras is with New Orleans.

Adaptive Materials, HandyLab, MediaSpan Expanding in Ann Arbor
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that three high-tech companies—Adaptive Materials Inc., HandyLab Inc. and MediaSpan Group Inc.—will expand in Ann Arbor as a result of assistance from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Combined, the expansions are expected to create 516 new jobs and generate more than $7.5 million in capital investment. Each company chose Michigan over competing sites in other states.

Feds target Detroit motorcycle club in national crackdown
Federal agents made a series of arrests this morning and raided the Detroit clubhouse of the Outlaws on West Warren Avenue as part of a national crackdown against the bike club deemed an outlaw motorcycle gang by the FBI.
Allegations include assault with a dangerous weapon against six defendants for an alleged attack on members of the rival Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in Indiana on April 1, 2006. Weapons used include a hammer, motorcycle parts and a cane, the indictment alleges.
I am skeptical whether this raid, which may protect the Hells Angels from being attacked in Indiana, really does anything to make the streets of Detroit any safer from gang violence. Could it even have the opposite effect?

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) is helping six companies grow in Michigan and is backing three redevelopment projects expected to create a total of 2,982 jobs and involve more than $52.3 million in new capital investment in communities throughout the state.
“We are working everyday to diversify Michigan’s economy by attracting and growing high-tech companies and new jobs,” Granholm said. “Our state is quickly becoming a hub for high-tech activity and these announcements are proof that growing firms want to do business in Michigan.”

Detroit couple are finalists in ‘Today’ show wedding
A Detroit couple is among four couples vying to be married live on NBC’s “Today Throws a Martha Stewart Wedding.”
Nicole Dent and Tommy Duncan, both 27, were introduced on the show this morning and will be mentioned in upcoming segments through Aug. 20 during the 8 a.m. hour.
Now they’re hoping Michiganders and others vote for couple No. 2 so they can return to the show on Wednesday, Aug. 22, when the winning couple will be announced.
In Detroit, the show airs 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. weekdays.
Viewers will have until 5 p.m. Monday to vote for their favorite couple.

The Detroit Regional Chamber’s Detroit Regional Economic Partnership helped to generate $66 million and create 644 new jobs in southeast Michigan, according to the latest figures released in the group’s annual investor report today.
The partnership, which helped 45 companies locate or expand their operations in metro Detroit from July 1, 2006 to June 30 2007, is the Chamber’s economic development organization.

Nigeria: World Igbo Congress
PLANS have been concluded for the annual convention of the pan-Igbo diaspora organization, the World Igbo Congress (WIC), holding in Detroit, Michigan, United States of America, from August 30 to September 2.
This year’s convention will be the 13th in a row since the WIC took shape in the last decades of the 20th century in America. As with previous conventions, the central objective of the this year’s convention will be to strategize on bringing needed development to the Igbo homeland.

From bizarre to burlesque
Once up on a time, a group of design students turned a strip of vacant homes in Detroit into the dilapidated midway of a haunted carnival, opening up for festivities one night a year around Halloween.
For instance, on Friday nights, audiences will find unusual movies screened every week until it just gets too cold outside. The event, held outdoors rain or shine, is dubbed Side Show Sinema. For $5, you can see a night of weird movies. There’s no set program, and lovers of horror films (or just plain bizarre films) gather each week, discs and tapes in hand, to cobble together a lineup of films for the evening. Past nights have seen screenings of Suburbia, The Doll Squad, The Forbidden Zone, Freaked, Dead Alive and a rare Japanese Laserdisc transfer of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s cult-experimental classic The Holy Mountain.
If your interests run more toward live entertainment, then you’ll want to visit Theatre Bizarre on Saturday, Aug. 18, when Torch with a Twist takes the stage. The monthly event celebrating old-time vaudeville, schmaltzy torch songs and over-the-top burlesque has graced downtown Detroit’s Cliff Bell’s since earlier this year. Expect performances from Lady Mischief, Jessica Rabbitt, DJ Evol and more.

The Detroit Evolution Laboratory, created as a clearinghouse for “health, joy and liberation for the people of Detroit,” is hosting some interesting cooking classes.
